17 year old Sean Williams is on the early track to success, having been named Redrow’s regional Apprentice of the Year 2018 for its North West and North Wales division.
The youngster from Abergele has made a big impression working at Redrow’s Goetre Uchaf development in Bangor, as an apprentice bricklayer and, in particular, helping to create feature walls for the housebuilder’s iconic ‘Arts and Crafts’-inspired Heritage collection.
As an apprentice, Sean has gained extensive and varied hands-on experience to complement his college studies working towards gaining an NVQ Level 3 in bricklaying. Goetre Uchaf has proved the ideal place to develop, recently scooping ‘Best Volume Housebuilder’ development for Gwynedd in the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2018.
Now the young trainee has been rewarded with an award from Redrow acknowledging his attention to detail and dedication to his craft, with Sean selected from Redrow’s NW division from a competitive crop of conscientious apprentices from across North Wales, Cheshire, and parts of Merseyside and South Manchester.
“Redrow have been fantastic to me since I joined and I can’t recommend them enough as a place to learn and develop a career,” reflected Sean.
“I’ve had some great experiences already, not only in brickwork but across the construction site and I work with a really great group of people.”
Sean’s immediate objective is to attain his NVQ Level 3 in bricklaying but he already has his sights on a long-term career within the construction sector.
Reflecting on his choice of career, the former Emrys Ap Iwan Foundation School, Abergele pupil added: “With me being an outdoor practical person, working in the construction industry really suits me as it stretches my skills.”
Paul Cromby, area construction manager for Redrow Homes (NW), described Sean has an “ambassador for the industry”, adding: “The award is incredibly well-deserved and we’ve all been so impressed by Sean’s approach to his work.”
Redrow’s first ever national apprenticeship awards were recently held at Jury’s Inn, Hinckley in Leicestershire, with Sean officially crowned Apprentice of the Year in the NW category. Each regional winner was put forward for a national prize, with apprentice painter and decorator Courtney Baker-Edwards, from Redrow’s South West division, winning an overall award.
Redrow offers a wide range of apprenticeships, including carpentry, electrical, bricklaying and plumbing, as well as office-based apprentices in a variety of administration, technical and commercial roles.
Around 15% of Redrow’s total workforce are apprentices or trainees and Redrow has been a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer for the last five years.
