Swansea Building Society shows dedication to cancer charity with Gower Macmarathon walk

A team from has completed the recent Gower Macmarathon walk, with the Society being headline sponsors of this major fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support since 2015.

Alun Williams, chief executive of Swansea Building Society, headed up a team for the 21st instalment of the Gower Macmarathon, which took place on Saturday 8 September 2018.

The Swansea Building Society team joined approximately 1000 walkers to complete the 22 mile walk from Rhossili to Mumbles Cricket Club to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Walkers also had the option to complete a 14 mile or 2.5 mile walk around the picturesque Gower peninsula. The 14 mile option took walkers from Port Eynon to Mumbles Cricket Club, and the 2.5 mile journey took walkers from Caswell Bay to Mumbles. The shorter walk is a recent addition to the event, which allows those recovering from treatment to get involved in this rewarding challenge.

This year has seen Swansea Building Society extend its sponsorship agreement with Macmillan until 2019. This commitment by the Society guarantees a minimum pledge of £12,000 per annum to Macmillan for 2018 and 2019.

Alun Williams, chief executive of Swansea Building Society, said:

“We were delighted once again to be sponsoring and taking part in this very popular fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s great that we can put something back into the local community as the only building society or bank with its headquarters in West Wales. The walk is a fun social event and it helps with fitness too, so I’m delighted that Swansea Building Society is the headline sponsor once again. We hope that we can add to the money we raised last year.”

In addition to its sponsorship of the Gower Macmarathon, Swansea Building Society also ran a fundraising drive for Macmillan, which saw the firm donate £1 to Macmillan for each vote cast by members at the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). This resulted in £1,450 being raised for Macmillan, with a cheque for the funds raised being presented to Macmillan’s West Wales fundraising manager, Sue Reece, at the Society’s AGM in April.

Sue Reece said:

“We are so grateful to Swansea Building Society, the Swansea Committee and everyone for their support and sheer commitment in making this such an amazing fundraising event for Macmillan locally, which has currently raised £119,301 from this year’s walk. With donations still being received, this figure is growing daily so I would like to say a big thank you to all involved – we couldn’t do what we do without you.”
